Even as you're reading this, there's a chance there's been a new addition to the Raptors family. And no, that is not to say Bryan Colangelo is in the midst of acquiring a rugged and athletic swingman as an early Christmas gift for the faithful.
The new arrival will be Jamario and Tamara Moon's first child, due any day now. If the ultrasound technician is correct, it's a girl for whom the Moons have already brainstormed a name: Taylin.
"I like the sound of it," said Moon, flashing a satisfied smile as he wished his teammates the best of the season in Monday night's locker room.
Perhaps the stark responsibility of fatherhood will startle Moon into the realization he is in a contract year. Colangelo can only hope. As the club breaks for the yuletide, Moon's inconsistency is among a long list of reasons why last year's .500 is this year's .393.
Said Colangelo, taking stock: "We made a deal this summer for Jermaine O'Neal that was the best deal on the table for all the right reasons, and no one's saying it's done and it's not going to work. It hasn't worked as well as we had hoped, but we're constantly working on it."
Colangelo was speaking in upbeat tones before the Raptors halted a five-game losing streak with a 97-75 win over the L.A. Clippers. And even if the Clippers were under-manned, there were small but heartening signs of hope for the visitors. In a rarity, Toronto won the battle of the boards, 48-38. And their re-jigged defence held the Clippers to 33 per cent shooting. So while the Raptors have lost eight of 11 games since Colangelo replaced coach Sam Mitchell with Jay Triano, under the new man their defensive field-goal percentage now resides below 43 per cent. Even if the sample size is small, only two teams in the league, Boston and Cleveland, are holding teams under 43 per cent this season.
That's a tangible improvement over the 17 games under Mitchell in which they allowed nearly 47 per cent gunning. And it's hard to believe it won't reap benefits eventually.
Still, there are holes not being plugged that will require new personnel. Heading into their game with the Clippers the Raptors remained last in the league in fast-break points, points in the paint and total rebounding percentage. And Colangelo acknowledged the sad truth of the O'Neal deal; that though it was designed to buoy the team's historically ghost-like interior presence – and while O'Neal has added credible numbers to the ledger in rebounds and blocked shots – the Raptors remain collectively weak in the trenches.
"It's pretty clear we've been standing around watching (O'Neal and Chris Bosh get rebounds)," said Colangelo. "It's focus and concentration. We've got the guys that can do it."
Still, Colangelo said a roster "tweak" will be a possible course of action. But he does not sound like a man ready to concede the season to a regress-for-progress trade. He did, however, seem beyond miffed that a writer this week had quoted an anonymous general manager saying Colangelo is "in a panic." Colangelo concedes he is putting in long hours on the phone talking swap. But he didn't appreciate being characterized as some demonic, last-minute Christmas shopper set ablaze by a losing streak. Exploring every available option in the marketplace, he said, is his year-round occupation.
"There is no fire sale. There is no panic," he said. "It's completely false that I've talked to the Knicks about a deal for Eddy Curry and whatever else (has been rumoured) and it's completely false that I am trying to give away Anthony Parker. And it is completely false that I'm panicking. We're not panicking.
"I would have traded Chris if I was panicking. That deal's there," and he laughed at the prospect of trading Bosh as though it is an absurdity. "There is no panic. ..... We're only going to make deals if they're the right deals."

Bosh DealI would like to know what the Bosh deal is and make my own determination on its merits before having it laughed off. If a Bosh trade (probably with Kapono thrown in) could net the Raps something like a Marion/Beasley/Cook combo it might actually be something to consider.

The Bottom Line: BC Must Do Something Significant What are the Raptors hoping for? Joe Dumars trades Chauncey 2 games into the season because he knows that team can't beat Boston or Cleveland. At least he recognizes reality. He also traded his mistake Darko for a 1st round draft pick which turned out to be Rodney Stuckey who scored 40 last night. In short, he's trying to make the team better and win a championship. However, in Toronto, BC says there is no panic. True, but doing nothing means lottery. Status quo means lottery. Simply put that is not good enough. He needs to trade his Darko, "Bargnani" before its too late. I think he will. It's entirely obvious. However, "tweaking" is going nowhere, except the lottery. Toronto fans deserve better. BC should be working to get this team to the championship level.

Basic Review15th in Blocks Differential. OK. 30th in Rebounds Differential. NOT OK. 23rd in Points Differential. NOT OK. 21st in Assists Differential. NOT OK. 15th in Steals Differential. OK. Improving the team rebounds is key to everything else. Minimizing opponents' 2nd chance points will improve all three of our basic deficiencies.

The Jermaine O'Neal trade was supposed to be the final stroke, but has turned out to be little more than a step towards building a contender. The next move needs to be at the three, where the most predominant rumor has the Raptors dealing with the Golden State Warriors. Don Nelson loves European big men and helped Dirk Nowitzki become a premier NBA player. Maybe he can do the same for Andrea Bargnani
