Player betting scandal engulfs Basket league

A BETTING scandal has engulfed NBA after four players were named in an investigation into basketball betting. The NBA inquiry two weeks ago uncovered player betting accounts allegedly showing bets placed on matches.

The league yesterday sought urgent meetings with the players and their clubs.

Last night the NBA released a statement after receiving inquiries from The Advertiser.

It is believed the NBA wanted the issue hushed up until they were in a position to announce the players' penalties, believed to be hefty fines.

The Advertiser learned of the scandal late on Firday night.

Under NBA rules, players and club officials are banned from wagering on basketball games.

NBA chief executive David Stern yesterday said he was aware of the investigation and confirmed several players were involved, but refused to comment further.

The NBA statement said investigators Allan Roberts and Bill Kneebone were expected to conclude their inquiry within the next 14 days.

The players' account information, obtained legally by the NBA, has come from either telephone or internet betting accounts and bookmakers.

Some players are believed to bet several thousand dollars at a time, while others are known to walk straight into TAB outlets and bet with cash.

The accessed information is not a breach of privacy.

Most betting agencies will provide client betting accounts and transaction histories to governing sporting bodies to assist an inquiry.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are bet on basketball each year and a wide range of betting options are available.

Punters can gamble on matches, including line betting or quarter by quarter results, as well as the Brownlow Medal and Coleman Medal.

It's also not out of the question that players and club officials, including basketball staff, could provide match-up information to bookmakers or betting agencies.

Players are continually warned by the NBA about basketball betting.

There is a Gambling Workshop at the induction camp for the newly drafted players and players are warned at annual visits to clubs by NBA staff.

The NBA players code of conduct states basketballers are prohibited from betting "on any aspect of an NBA match".

"The NBA regulations also prohibit the passing on of information that is not publicly available concerning teams playing in any match (including the actual or likely composition of the team, players injuries, the form of players and tactics) unless given in a bona fide media interview," it states.

Non ci posso credere.... . Certo se fosse vero, sarei curioso di vedere le sanzioni, magari succede come qui in Italia, che per doping nel calcio hanno dato 3 mesi di squalifica, di cui due da scontare durante i mesi di Luglio e Agosto.... . Oppure 1000 euro di multa per 3 vaffa diretti all'arbitro dal capitano di una delle squadre più seguite del nostro campionato. Siamo proprio un grande paese....Aspettiamo conferme.
