With 11 games to play, the Toronto Raptors are eight wins behind the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls, not coincidentally, sit eighth in the Eastern Conference.

And that, as Forrest Gump once pronounced, is all I am going to say about that.

It feels as if the rest of the regular season never happened.

Jose Calderon is darting about like a waterbug in a tea cup. In Wednesday’s 115-106 win over Milwaukee, Calderon absolutely abused the Bucks. He had 19 points and 11 assists, hit seven of 12 from the field and three of five from beyond the arc. Thanks to Calderon’s frequent incursions into the Bucks’ interior defence, the visitors were scrambling all night. The Raptors shot 40 free throws, an astounding amount. The club’s three big men, Chris Bosh, Andrea Bargnani and Shawn Marion toed the line 25 times.

But here’s another statistic that has gone all but unnoticed, one unearthed by the Toronto Sun’s Frank Zicarelli. Andrea Bargnani has 82 blocks. One more and he will pass the traded Jermaine O’Neal for the club lead. Chris Bosh has 62. Now, it’s not like the Raptors interior defence is particularly intimidating. The club is 25th in the league in blocks per game.

But imagine where the team would be without Bargnani.

And that’s my point.

Three years after his draft, Bargnani’s status is worth reconsidering.

LaMarcus Aldridge is delivering 18 points a night in Portland. Rudy Gay is doing likewise with the Grizzlies.

Guard Brandon Roy is hitting superstardom with the Blazers.

You can argue whether Bargnani, the first overall in 2006, deserved to be the true number one.

But you can’t debate that he belongs. And that is a phenomenon.

Bargnani was infinitely less familiar with the demands of the NBA than the other high profile players seconded into the league in the 2006 draft. He didn’t have the benefit of a development system geared to churning out NBA players in much the same way Canada’s minor hockey chain provides fodder for the NHL.

He was spindly. He had to master a new language, a different set of rules and the rigors of an NBA schedule. He changed positions, diets, he changed everything.

Still, it took a knee injury to Jermaine O’Neal and who knows, a coaching change, for the newly-confident Bargnani to grab his opportunity.

When you total them up, there is a formidable pile of uncertainties for GM Bryan Colangelo to wrestle with when the weather warms up. Start with the distinct possibility of Shawn Marion moving on and the task of attracting more talent here with those dollars. Joey Graham and Anthony Parker are up. Chris Bosh has a year left before he can opt out. Perhaps you have heard.

It’s now that you build on the elements you think you can count on. Calderon finally freed from his right hamstring injury. Andrea Bargnani, a 20-point six rebound guy or better, settled nicely among the NBA’s better big men with his sights set even higher.

Si la sua immagine sta cambiando seriamente,d'altronde si parla di un giocatore che è passato da una decina di punti a partita a 20 abbondanti,scusate se è poco.
Lui insiste moltissimo ogni volta che lo intervistano sul fatto che non ha mai giocato cosi tanti minuti,secondo lui i suoi progressi sono sono dovuti a questo.
In questo senso bisogna dare atto a tutti quelli che in questo Forum hanno sempre sostenuto questa ipotesi.

Io dico solo che la soglia alla quale noi di italianbasket.it attribuiamo alla partita di Bargnani l'aggettivo "buona" si è notevolmente alzata.

Beh quando Lebron ne fa trenta io mi chiedo che cazzo è venuto a fare in campo se non aveva voglia di impegnarsi.

E' giusto che più il ragazzo dimostra più gli si chieda di dare.

Ma è ovvio.Era solo un osservazione,che dà ragione ai miglioramenti di Bargnani,diventato più consistente che mai.Fanculo l'ottovolante
