According to The Houston Chronicle, Houston Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo tore his patellar tendon early in Game 2 of the Rockets' series against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Dikembe Mutomo said he had played his last NBA game. He'll be remembered as both a great defender and a great, great citizen of the world.
Dikembe Mutombo limped out of the Houston Rockets locker room on a pair of crutches after Game 2 fighting back tears.
That's how his storied 18-year NBA career will likely end.
"It's bad. It's just bad. I need surgery, so it's over for me – for my career," said an emotional Mutombo.
"For me basketball is over. I cried so much about it when I was lying on the floor."
Mutombo went down with 1:17 left in the first quarter and was carried off the floor on a stretcher with what was listed as a left knee strain according to the Rockets.
Now it appears worse. Far worse.
His resume speaks for itself: Mutombo was the NBA's first four-time recipient of the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001) and stands on the NBA's all-time blocked shots list among other notable accomplishments.
Yet on Tuesday night in Portland, with Mutombo fouling Portland's Greg Oden in the first quarter and quickly going to the floor clutching his left knee, all Dikembe could think about was the end of his career.
"Right now all I can say is that I had a wonderful time during these 18 years to stay injury free. I thank God a lot for all of his blessings, for putting such great people around me all of my life and throughout my career in the NBA," he continued.
"I just have to go out with my head up and go with without regrets. I have so many things that I can be thankful for over my 18 years. We'll have to see what the doctors have to say during the evaluation."
The Rockets and Mutombo would not comment further on his injury.
Just know it was a sad sight to see one of the leagues great centers having to end his career in this. way.
